Can Our Country Benefit From National Health Insurance?

Thousands of physicians in the United States doctors have requested the government to finance national health insurance, which they believe could cover every last American’s current health care requirements while saving countless amounts of money. National health coverage was once met by opposition from the pharmaceutical industry, medical community, and health insurance providers alike.  Past attempts to create this type of program were mired in controversy dooming them to failure.  Now, physicians are arguing that insurance through the private sector is irretrievably broken.

This group of physicians, however, contends that Congress’s current efforts to create a prescription drug plan for senior citizens and those with disabilities will only result in funneling more of the government’s money to private companies and would not benefit consumers. Doctors advocate a single payer system, basically a more expanded form of Medicare, which has been an enormously successful program for seniors and the disabled and which is administered by the government.  Health care organizations, mostly initiated as the only hope for health care, have increased the cost of Medicare substantially but haven’t done much to win over the favor of the public.

The hospital chains that are owned by investors, which had promised efficiency, have been decimated by scandals. Doctors contend that pharmaceutical companies and drug manufacturers, which have made the largest profits and also paid the least amount of taxes in the past, sell medicine at a rate that most people can’t afford even though they need them. The doctors put forth this single payer system proposal in the highly respected journal of medicine.  The doctors leading the fight for national health care coverage include 2 former Surgeons General, and the former Editor of one of the foremost American medical journals. It has been pointed out by a lecturer from Harvard Medical School the current system is obviously self-destructing and will not be able to continue the way it has been. The single payer option isn’t the optimal alternative; it’s the only way things can be.

However, the American Medical Association is still opposed to a single payer health care system, according to the current president in an official press release. He says that if the United States ends up bringing in the single payer system, it would mean trading off one problem for an whole group of problems that are equally as serious. His list included long waits for any health care services, a slower response in accepting newer technologies, facility maintenance, as well as another large bureaucracy that would develop and  result in more patients and their doctors losing their authority over any of the clinical decision-making applications, which are all characteristics of a single payer system.

The lobbying branch of the managed health care profession, the American Association of Health Plans, additionally reported that it does not support the doctor’s proposal because it would extirpate profit for health maintenance groups and hospitals.
