Japan’s desperate ‘nuclear gypsies’

With the current economic downturn, many of Japan’s poorest are so desperate for work that they are risking exposure to dangerous levels of radiation at the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant. The growing number of so-called nuclear gypsies, who come from across the country, are working to repair the reactor crippled by the March 11 tsunami in the northern city of Osaka. Its a job with severe health risks that most are not willing to brave. Labour rights groups have complained to authorities about the lack of protection for the workers – who are not guaranteed training or health insurance. Step Vaessen reports from Osaka.

“the reactor crippled by the March 11 tsunami in the northern city of Osaka”????
Errr, Osaka’s more than 500 km away from Fukushima where the? tsunami-struck nuclear reactors are located…

  • jazzflutist says:

They’re obviously not hooked to the internet, so have no way of knowing what they’re getting into. Workers in the U.S. and worldwide are? being treated the same way. Disasters mean money, to those at the top. Disaster capitalism, with a vengeance.

  • TimmacTR says:

@lamapper real patriotism is not a bad? thing..

  • Verradonairun says:

An extremely racist? title…As a news agency you might want to reconsider this.

  • lamapper says:

@TimmacTR? and just like here in America, they will ramp up the “patriotism” and send them off to die.

  • lamapper says:

This is what is what has been happening in America since President Reagan’s presidency. Jack Welch is famous for saying he would put his factory on a barge and anchor it off the country offering the cheapest labor. Well thanks to massive redistribution of wealth by conservative Corpers ? who have effectively controlled the media for over 60 years…they can leave their plant here. Just look at Gulf Syndrome. Next NE Fort Calhoun Syndrome or worse?

  • TimmacTR says:

@CaptainLecher I get your point, but I also stand by what I say, these people are? brave…or crazy maybe..

  • lovetohate028 says:

    @VictimOfBoredom? well stated

  • CaptainLecher says:

@TimmacTR What part of “In most parts” did you not understand? the US is not the whole western world you know.

    “Japanese people ….”

Yeah, thats called nationalism, and I dont think its great. But I agree? with you that the west can learn something from the Japanese people, the responsibility part, not the nationalism part.

I checked out the Skilled Veterans Corps, and I dident know about them, so thank you for telling me about them.

I still stand by what I said in the desperate part.

  • TimmacTR says:

@CaptainLecher In US people die in the streets nobody gives a shit, what are you talking about..

Japanese people, thanks to their culture and development, have a sense of honor and responsibility, at least for their own people, which is already something great and that we cannot see a lot in the west..

Check ”Skilled Veterans Corps”. These are elderly japanese? people have actually VOLUNTEERED, to clean up the mess because they thought it was their generation’s responsibility.. ’nuff said

  • CaptainLecher says:

@TimmacTR In most part of the western world we have help for the poor people… so poor people are not forced to take these? kinds of jobs… again not brave, only poor and desperate.
