Crash Test 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air vs. 2009 Chevrolet Malibu (Frontal Offset) IIHS 50th Anniversary
In the 50 years since US insurers organized the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, car crashworthiness has improved. Demonstrating this was a crash test conducted on Sept. 9 between a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air and a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. In a real-world collision similar to this test, occupants of the new model would fare much better than in the vintage Chevy. “It was night and day, the difference in occupant protection,” says Institute president Adrian Lund. What this test shows is that automakers don’t build cars like they used to. They build them better.” The crash test was conducted at an event to celebrate the contributions of auto insurers to highway safety progress over 50 years. Beginning with the Institute’s 1959 founding, insurers have maintained the resolve, articulated in the 1950s, to “conduct, sponsor, and encourage programs designed to aid in the conservation and preservation of life and property from the hazards of highway accidents.” A decade after the Institute was founded, insurers directed this organization to begin collecting data on crashes and the cost of repairing vehicles damaged in crashes. To lead this work and the Institute’s expanded research program, insurers named a new president, William Haddon Jr., who already was a pioneer in the field of highway safety. In welcoming Dr. Haddon, Thomas Morrill of State Farm said “the ability to bring unbiased scientific data to the table is extremely valuable.” This scientific approach, ushered in by …

MY GOD! Funny that GM still only has TWO five star rated cars in their line up, though.
@ignatzRat LOL – also very true!!! Thanks for the good response!
@quirpco GOOD ONE!!!! or listening to Vic Damone on the aftermarket “in car” record player
while butting his Lucky Strikes in the ashtray while sliding around on the clear plastic seat covers while attempting to look through the yellowing stick on oval window fog preventers .
@1olrocker Right on! Keep them stored for the parade or car show.. I love old cars too, But they are really lame for all around performance wise (handling braking cornering etc).. some of these guys will tell you that they can fly (with the big fins they might) as per Wiki
1959 Base V-8 was the carryover 283, at 185 horsepower. Performance fans could select 283-cubic-inch outputs to 290 horsepower – or turn to the big-block 348-cubic-inch V-8 up to 315 horsepower.
315 horse my 6 cyl does that!
1959 driver DEAD or severe injuries 09 driver walks away.. end of story.
A quick check on the net of the general auto death statistics per 100,000 population
as per one source on the net 1958 rate 21.4
and per 2009 rate 11.01
The purpose is NOT to have your car in great shape after the crash, But to prevent them from carrying your head home in a bucket
@ratrodrocky amen somebody really fucked up on this one. Its like takin a shit on the mona lisa.
proves that chevy’s are shit the solid frames design of the plymouth from 1959 would have sent that modern peice of shit flying. and on another note put that modern shit box up against a mercedes and you will have a modern day aushwitz in that new chevy. Wake up chevy guys drive mopars or look what happens…..
0:58-1:04 Sand? Paint Shavings?
Those antiques are cool to look at but I’d never want to drive one. Forget how unsafe they are, I’ll take my modern 18″ wheels, 4 wheel disc brakes, independent suspension, close ratio rack and pinion steering fuel injection, overhead cam, 6 speed transmission over the slow, sloppy, boring performance of old cars. People spin yards about how great old cars are, they’re slow and sloppy compared to modern cars.
fucken assholes destroying a very mint 59 bel air
Great distraction and great vide0!! thank u webmovietube
try crash in a oldsmobile delta. thats the tank we’re talkin about
Who gives a rats behind, you just demolished a classic. how many 59s are you going to hit with this tin can of yours anyway.
Eh.. gimme a modern car over an antique any time
@1acroyear1 “work of art and an expression of LOVE of freedom, the open road and mostly of the American Way”.
I think many of today’s cars give the same feeling and look much better. I prefer the modern look.
DRUNK TANK!!!
