Home Shield Insurance: Question About Hospital Bills?
Question by Eric: Question about hospital bills?
I spent a night in the hospital this past weekend due to an accidental prescription overdose. They ruled out any sort of mental problems and chemical dependency problems with me. I was wondering How much the bills will be for me, I am covered under health insurance with blue cross and blue shield of minnesota. During my 12 hour stay (or so) I was given a saline solution, a urine test which was negative for illegal drugs, blood was drawn from me. I was placed on an EKG. I was given a ride home in a taxi (which the hospital paid for) and had a breakfast. The questions i’m wondering are:
1. How much do you think it will cost?
2. When a hospital bill comes in the mail, will it be from the hospital or will it say “Blue Cross and Blue Shield insurance” on the envelope?
-also how long does it take a hospital bill to arrive?

This all depends on your insurance coverage. It should cover what you had done at the hospital. Do you have a deductible? Or co-insurance? (where you pay a percentage and the insurance pays a percentage). If so, you will have to pay this. It usually takes a while. The hospital will bill the insurance company, the insurance company will then issue payment to the hospital, then whatever is not covered will be billed to you. It will come from the hospital and it can take anywhere for a week to over a month to receive a bill. it depends on how fast the hospital bills and how fast the insurance company submits payment.
Call your insurance carrier to find out what your benefits are.

1. No idea. It’s going to depend on your plan coverages.
2. You’ll get several bills – but the one you worry about, is the one from your insurance company, the ‘explanation of benefits’. It will tell you how much of the bills YOU are responsible for.
Most likely you will receive the hospital bill 1st. Then a week or 2 more will receive a EOB (explanation of benefits) from BCBS.
On the EOB, will list each service, ie; hospital, labs, EKG etc.
By the service, will state if in network or out of network.
Then it will show amount charged
Then show amount allowed
Then it will show co-insurance if any
Then finally it will show patient owes.
So when you get all of your bills, compare to the EOB. What they state as PATIENT OWES OR WILL BE BILLED, is the amount you will have to pay out of pocket.
BCBS probably has over 100 plans out there, each has a different deductible, co-pays, co-insurance so there is no set amount.
If you have any questions on what to pay, you can call them after you get your bills.
good luck
What anyone here thinks doesn’t matter. What you need to do is get in touch with the hospital’s billing/business dept and make sure that they have your correct insurance information. Once your insurance has paid it’s share, you’ll be billed by the hospital for the remainder. The insurer does not bill you – the provider does.
I’m guessing somewhere between $ 10 and $ 20,000.
We’d have absolutely no idea how your plan works. Call the insurance company and ask them. Do you have an HMO or PPO, do you pay for hospitalization or is it covered 100%, do you have a deductible and how much is it, do you have a copay for the hospital, or do you even have coverage for a hospital?
You may have to contact them anyway just to notify them that you were in the hospital and unable to call for preauthorization – it’s better to call needlessly then not call and have 50% of your bill not covered. AND, when you call them you can ask how your plan works. Usually you have to call within ~48 hours so I’d jump on that.
What will happen is you’ll receive multiple explanation of benefits from the insurance company showing what was billed, what they approved, and how much you’ll owe.
Later, you’ll receive bills from the doctors, labs and hospital that treated you. Match the providers’ bills with the ‘amount you’re responsible for’ from the explanation of benefits so that you know you’re paying the proper amount.
