What Is Considered “successful?” I Live in the US, Make Less Than $10,000 a Year, and I Live Comfortably So ?

Question by IMUS B: What is considered “successful?” I in the US, make less than ,000 a year, and I live comfortably so ?
I just retired at age 37 after working in a factory for 20 years. I get a pension equal to $ 35 for every year of service that I worked ($ 700/mo). My15 yr mortgage will be paid off in 2011 and with taxes and insurance all combined is $ 293 a month. It is a cozy 2 bdrm home (a little less than 1,000 sf.) that I bought for $ 40,000. I have no other loans or debt and no credit cards. I have a car and a motorcycle that are both paid for. I am very frugal and have always live well below my means.

Everything else I pay, insurance, utilities, food gas and $ 10 every 3 months for a prepaid cellular phone all total less than $ 300 a month. I still have $ 100 bucks or so leftover after all expenses are paid (which after 2011 will be about $ 400 leftover once my house is paid off).

I have never been married and don’t have (and don’t want to have) any kids. Anyway, like I said I live comfortably on $ 8,400 a year which is about half of the “poverty line” for my area. I have six figures in a 401K all in an interest producing bond that yields from 3% to 8% (even in 2008). I have all the necessities and really don’t see a need to take on any more debt whatsoever. It seems like monetarily most people say only $ 100,000 a year or more is successful.

So, my question is at age 37, with very low income but very low debt…am i “successful” or not?

It is how you define it, not how others define it.
Dont worry about keeping up with “the Jones’s”. Go your own way.
I’f your happy then that is success, isnt it?!

i would think that you are sucessfull! your happy you have stabilty thats more than a lot of rich people can say. honestly if your happy thats the main thing. money cant buy happiness and as long as you feel secure than long story short…. of course!

well if your happy , your happy right and you dont owe anything to anyone so all the power to you , but 8000 sum a year is not a lot i worked at mcdonalds and made like 13000 in a year

  • ILoveMySon says:

if you feel you are then yes but I think 100k is more than successfull!

If you are happy, not struggling to eat and have a nice place to live then you should consider yourself successful. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.

I would say so! Some people have huge debts that will take much longer to pay off. As long as you remain constant with your net income, you should be good. But I would make sure you are prepared for things like a car accident or illness or anything that might need a bit more money to fix

Your as happy as you want to be.Sounds like you’ve done well for yourself,so if you consider your yourself successful, then so be it!Its not about what other people think of you.Why put yourself in debt just to keep up with what other people think you should have.Be yourself and keep doing whatever it is you’ve been doing.

Personally… only you can define your own personal success. If you have achieved your goals, then you are successful.

Happiness is worth more than any $ $

  • rragsdaleii says:

    Successful = happy

If you are happy with your life and feel you’ve accomplished all you want to accomplish then you are successful. I have a wife, a baby and a love for good food and tropical vacations. $ 8,400 a month would not work me much less $ 8,400 a year but like I said successful isn’t measured in money it’s measured in fulfillment.

Dang straight successful isn’t a number, its being happy and secure. Do you have health insurance, and a plan if your car breaks? Other than that your doing fine, also does your pension increase or is it a fixed amount, that will hurt you when inflation and higher property taxes come around.

Yes it is.i too live a very modest life style and life is so much more enjoyable. And that is what life should be about.

  • patrick says:

being “successful” isnt nearly as important as being happy with the quality of your life. Sounds as if you are very happy, sleep well at night, and want for nothing.
In my definition, that would make you successful.
